National Flag of the Republic of Zambia (1996)

From the late 19th century until independence in 1964, landlocked Zambia was a British colony called Northern Rhodesia, after the British colonial promoter and businessman, Cecil Rhodes.

In 1953, the British territories of Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Nyasaland (Malawi), formed part of a British colonial constructed union called the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

As African nationalism grew in the region the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland dissolved in 1963 and on the 24th of October 1964, Northern Rhodesia gained its independence. It was renamed the Republic of Zambia and adopted the basic design of the current national flag.

The current Zambian national flag dates from 1996, but contains the same elements as the one adopted at independence. The last modification included slight alterations to the eagle.

The Symbolic Meaning

Green represents Zambia's vegetation and natural wealth. Red symbolises the country's struggle for independence. Black represents the people of Zambia and orange symbolises Zambia's mineral wealth, especially copper.

The eagle, wings spread, also appears in Zambia's coat of arms and represents freedom.
