National Flag of the Republic of Uganda (1962)

From the late 19th century until independence in 1962, the landlocked central African nation of Uganda was administered as a British protectorate.

Uganda's first post-colonial government adopted the current national flag on the 9th of October 1962.

It is based on the flag of the Ugandan People's Congress, a political party involved in the Ugandan independence movement, whose leader became Uganda's first nationally elected Prime Minister.

The Symbolic Meaning

Black symbolises the African people. Yellow represents the sun and red symbolises brotherhood and fraternity.

The crested crane, placed on a white disk in the centre of the flag, is a national symbol of Uganda first used during British colonial times.
