National Flag of the Tunisian Republic (1999)

Tunisia’s flag dates from about 1831-1835 and is based on the flag of the Ottoman (Turkish) Empire, then rulers of Tunisia.

The flag remained unaltered when imperial Ottoman rule ended and French colonial rule began in 1881.

It became the national flag when Tunisia achieved independence from France in 1956.

In 1957, the monarchy was overthrown and Tunisia was proclaimed a republic.

Slight modifications have been made to the flag over time, with the current design dating from the 3rd of July 1999.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red is a traditional Islamic colour and was the colour adopted by the Ottoman Empire, rulers of Tunisia from late 16th century until 1881.

The crescent and star are traditional symbols of Islam.

The white disc symbolises the sun.
