State Flag of the Kingdom of Tonga (c1862)

Tonga, also known as the Friendly Islands, is an independent Polynesian monarchy consisting of some 150 islands in the south-west Pacific Ocean.

The Tongan flag was introduced in the early to mid-1860s and was officially confirmed in the Tongan constitution on the 4th of November 1875, which stipulated that the flag was never to be changed.

It was based on an idea from the Tongan King, George Tupou I and possibly patterned on the British Red Ensign, a red flag with the Union Flag or Union Jack in the upper hoist.

The Symbolic Meaning

The red cross in the upper hoist reflects the Christian beliefs of the nation.

White symbolises purity and red represents the blood Jesus shed at his crucifixion. It also reminds Tongan’s that they owe their salvation to him.
