National Flag of

Tokelau, formerly the Union Islands, is an external territory of New Zealand comprising three atolls or islands situated in the south-western Pacific Ocean.

Tokelau officially became an external territory of New Zealand in 1949 and was provided limited self-government in 1996.

The low-lying islands of Tokelau are threatened by the rising sea levels associated with global warming.

The flag was introduced in October 1986 and is flown subordinate to the flag of New Zealand.

The Symbolic Meaning

The design of the flag is intended to reflect the shape of an atoll.

Blue symbolises the Pacific Ocean.

The palm tree represents the local flora of Tokelau.

The three five-pointed white stars symbolise the three islands or atolls of Tokelau: Atafu, Fakaofo and Nukunonu.
