National Flag of the Republic of Tajikistan (1992)

Tajikistan is named after the Tajik people, the ethnic majority of Tajikistan, who settled the area over a thousand years ago.

Tajikistan was a constituent member of the former Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), as the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, until the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s.

Tajikistan proclaimed its independence as the Republic of Tajikistan on the 9th of September 1991 and adopted its current national flag on the 24th of November 1992.

As the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, Tajikistan used a red flag featuring thin white and green horizontal stripes, with associated Soviet state emblems.

These three colours came to be the basis of the current national flag.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents Tajikistan’s independence and the land. White symbolises purity and the cotton industry, a mainstay of the Tajik economy. Green represents Tajikistan’s agriculture.

The crown and stars represent Tajik sovereignty and the unity of Tajikistan’s social classes.
