National Flag of the Kingdom of Swaziland (1967)

Swaziland, a landlocked south-east African monarchy, adopted its current national flag on the 30th of October 1967, a year before it achieved full independence from British colonial rule.

The colours of the Swaziland flag are based on a military flag presented to the Swazi Pioneer Corps, in 1941, by the then king of Swaziland to remind them of Swazi military traditions.

The Swazi Pioneer Corps was a Swazi regiment fighting with the allies during WWII.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents the past battles the Swazi have fought, yellow symbolises the mineral wealth of Swaziland and blue connotes peace.

The central motif features an ox hide combat shield from the traditional Swazi Emasotsha Regiment, as well as their assegais or spears, a Swazi fighting stick and three royal Swazi ornamental tassels called tinjobo, which are made from widow bird and loury feathers.
