National Flag of the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis (1983)

The Federation of Saint Kitts (also known as Saint Christopher) and Nevis comprises two of the Leeward Islands situated in the eastern Caribbean Sea.

St. Kitts and Nevis obtained self-rule from their former colonial ruler, Great Britain, in 1967 and received full independence as a constitutional monarchy on the 19th of September 1983. On the same day they adopted their current national flag.

The flag is based on a design submitted by local teacher Edrice Lewis, as part of a nationally held flag competition.

The Symbolic Meaning

Green represents agriculture and the fertility of the land. Red symbolises the difficulty to end slavery and colonialism and to achieve independence. Black represents the African heritage of the islands. Yellow symbolises the ever-present sunshine in the Caribbean.

The two white five-pointed stars represent the islands of St. Kitts and Nevis and symbolise liberty and hope.
