National Flag of the Solomon Islands (1977)

The Solomon Islands, formerly called the British Solomon Islands, is an archipelago nation situated in the south-west Pacific Ocean, comprising about 35 islands and atolls.

The flag of the Solomon Islands was adopted on the 18th of November 1977, shortly after being granted self-government by their colonial ruler Great Britain.

The flag remained unchanged when independence was proclaimed on the 7th of July 1978.

The Symbolic Meaning

Blue symbolises the importance of water and the Pacific Ocean. Yellow represents sunshine and green symbolises the fertility of the islands.

The five stars originally represented the five administrative districts that existed at the time of the Solomon Islands independence.

With an increase in the number of districts in the country, a more recent interpretation has the five stars symbolising the five main island groups that make up the Solomon Islands.
