The island nation of Singapore unveiled its current national flag on the 3rd of December 1959, shortly after being granted self-government by its colonial ruler Great Britain.
In September 1963, Singapore joined with Malaya, North Borneo (now Sabah) and Sarawak to form the Federation of Malaysia.
Singapore withdrew from the Federation of Malaysia on the 9th of August 1965 and proclaimed its independence as the Republic of Singapore in December 1965, officially adopting the red and white flag as its national flag. |
