Civil Flag of the Republic of San Marino (1797)

Surrounded by Italy, the landlocked Republic of San Marino located on the slopes of Mt. Titano, is one of the smallest and oldest republics in the world.

According to legend, San Marino was named after and founded by Marius, a Christian stonecutter, who took refuge on Mt Titano from religious persecution, early in the 4th century.

Blue and white were adopted from the country’s coat of arms, which date back to at least the 14th century.

The colours were applied to a cockade (a badge consisting of concentric circles) and a horizontal striped bicolour flag as a sign of sovereignty and independence around 1797.

San Marino also has a state flag, which features the national coat of arms placed in the centre of the flag, overlapping the white and blue stripes.

The current state flag was adopted on the 6th of April 1

The Symbolic Meaning

Blue symbolises the sky and white represents the clouds around the mountain republic and the snow that caps Mt. Titano during winter.
