Local nationalists introduced the Romanian colours of
red, yellow and blue as a horizontal striped flag in 1848.
In 1861, the principality of Romania was established when the principalities of Walachia and Moldavia united. The new Romanian principality adopted a
red (top), yellow (middle) and blue (bottom) horizontal striped tricolour as its flag.
The French national flag influenced a Romanian flag design modification in 1867, when the flag was changed to the current vertical pattern and the colours reversed to blue-yellow-red.
In 1878, Romania’s independence was officially acknowledged and the blue-yellow-red vertical striped flag became the national flag.
Between 1867 and 1989, the Romanian flag featured the state’s coat of arms centrally placed on the yellow stripe.
On the 27th of December 1989, the arms were removed from the flag and the current design adopted. |
