National Flag of the Republic of Niger (1959)

Formerly a province of the French ruled French West Africa, landlocked Niger adopted its national flag on the 23rd of November 1959, while still an autonomous republic of the French Community.

The flag remained unchanged when Niger gained full independence on the 3rd of August 1960.

The Symbolic Meaning

Orange symbolises the Sahara Desert, which covers more than half of Niger. White stands for purity and innocence. Green represents the lush vegetation and fertile agricultural areas of south and west Niger.

The orange disc symbolises the sun and connotes the preparedness of Niger to defend its freedom.
