National Flag of the Federated States of Micronesia (1978)

The Federated States of Micronesia, situated in the western Pacific Ocean, comprises four islands (states in the Federation) of the Caroline Islands group: Chuuk (formerly Truk), Kosrae, Pohnpei (formerly Ponape) and Yap.

The Federated States of Micronesia was created from within the former United Nations authorised and United States administered Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands.

The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands was formed after the Second World War, in 1947 and incorporated more than 2000 islands in the west and north-west Pacific Ocean; it included the Caroline, Marianas and Marshall Islands.

The four states making up the Federated States of Micronesia adopted the current national flag on the 30th of November 1978.

It is a modified version of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands flag, which comprised a blue field with six white stars.

Self-government was attained and the Federated States of Micronesia was proclaimed in 1979.

The flag remained unchanged when the Federated States of Micronesia achieved independence in 1986.

The Symbolic Meaning

The blue field symbolises the Pacific Ocean and the stars represent the four states that make up the Federated States of Micronesia.

The design has its origins in the flag of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The colours of that flag were adopted from the flag of the United Nations.
