Named in the late 16th century by the Dutch after Prince Maurice of Nassau, the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius achieved independence from British colonial rule and adopted its current national flag on the 12th of March 1968.

The flag remained unchanged when Mauritius became a republic on the 12th of March 1992.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents the struggle for independence. Blue symbolises the Indian Ocean, which surrounds the island nation. Yellow connotes a bright future following independence. Green represents the evergreen vegetation of the island and its agriculture.
