State Flag of the Republic of Maldives (1965)

The Sultanate of the Maldives gained independence from Great Britain and adopted the current national flag on the 26th of July 1965.

Originally the Maldives used a plain red flag, this was later modified to include a black and white striped strip at the hoist, a central green panel and a white crescent. The black and white strip was omitted from the flag prior to its adoption at independence.

This flag remained unchanged when the Maldives became a republic in 1968.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents the blood spilt for independence and the nation’s sovereignty. Green connotes peace and prosperity.

The crescent symbolises the Islamic faith of the island nation.
