The Sultanate of the Maldives gained independence from Great Britain and adopted the current national flag on the 26th of July 1965.
Originally the Maldives used a plain red flag, this was later modified to include a black and white striped strip
at the hoist, a central green panel and a white crescent. The black and white strip was omitted from the flag prior to its adoption at independence.
This flag remained unchanged when the Maldives became a republic in 1968. |
