In 1972 Libya, Egypt and Syria formed a union called the Federation of Arab Republics.
The flag adopted by all three Federation members was based on the Arab Liberation Flag
(red-white-black horizontal stripes).
However, Libya left from the Federation in 1977; the separation was partly due to
the Egyptian government holding conciliatory discussions with the Israeli
government.
With the dissolution of the Federation, Libya adopted a plain green flag in November 1977.
The Libyan flag has the distinction of being the only monochromatic (single colour) national flag in the world. |
