State Flag of the Republic of Kenya (1963) |
|
The Kenyan flag was adopted upon independence from Great Britain on the 12th of December 1963.
It is based on the flag of the Kenyan African National Union (KANU),
the political party that led the campaign for Kenya’s independence.
Originally called the Dominion of Kenya at independence, it became the Republic of Kenya in 1964. |

The Symbolic Meaning |
|
Black represents the African people, red symbolises the struggle for independence and green represents agriculture.
The thin white lines symbolise peace and unity.
The central emblem consists of a Masai warrior’s shield and spears; together they recall Kenya’s fight for freedom and represent the preparedness of Kenya to defend that freedom. |
