National Flag of the Republic of Gambia (1965)

The Gambia was a British colony from the mid-19th century, until the 18th of February 1965, when full independence was achieved.

The Gambia is named after the Gambia River, which the country straddles for approximately 290 kilometres.

The concept of the national flag came from The Gambia, but was designed by the College of Arms, England.

The current flag dates from the 18th of February 1965.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red represents the sun shining on the Gambia River, blue symbolises the Gambia River, which runs through the centre of the country (and the centre of the flag), green represents the land and agriculture, while the white stripes connote peace and unity.
