Civil Flag of the Republic of Costa Rica (1964)

In 1848, Costa Rica became a republic and adopted the basic five horizontal striped flag still in use today.

Costa Rica briefly joined a federation of states called the United Provinces of Central America (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua), the blue and white of the flag are an historical link to this union and also remain in the flags of the other former members.

Red was added to the blue and white of the flag in 1848, in honour of the French Revolution.

Minor changes have been made to the flag over time, the current design dates from the 21st of October 1964.

Cost Rica also has a state flag, which features the national coat of arms placed in the middle of the red stripe, slightly off centred towards the hoist.

The current state flag was adopted on the 21st of October 1964.

The Symbolic Meaning

Blue represents the skies above Costa Rica, white signifies happiness and peace, while red represents the blood spilt for Costa Rican freedom and for the warmth of the nation's people.
