A landlocked
former French colony called Upper Volta, Burkina Faso achieved independence from France on
the 9th of December 1959.
After a military coup
Upper Volta changed its name, on the 4th of August 1984, to Burkina Faso
("the country of honourable people" or " land of the
righteous") and adopted the current Burkina Faso flag. The
introduction of a new flag was a symbolic severing of the pre-colonial
days and to signify a new start. Included in the flag design
is the use of the pan-African colours (red, yellow and green)
representing, among other things, unity with other African
ex-colonies. It is believed the colours
originated from the flag of Ethiopia, the oldest independent nation in
Africa. |
