National Flag of Burkina Faso (1984)

A landlocked former French colony called Upper Volta, Burkina Faso achieved independence from France on the 9th of December 1959.

After a military coup Upper Volta changed its name, on the 4th of August 1984, to Burkina Faso ("the country of honourable people" or " land of the righteous") and adopted the current Burkina Faso flag.

The introduction of a new flag was a symbolic severing of the pre-colonial days and to signify a new start.

Included in the flag design is the use of the pan-African colours (red, yellow and green) representing, among other things, unity with other African ex-colonies.

It is believed the colours originated from the flag of Ethiopia, the oldest independent nation in Africa.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red symbolizes the revolutionary struggle, while green reflects hope and the abundance of Burkina Faso's natural riches.

The yellow five-pointed star represents the guiding light of the revolution.
