State Flag of the State of Brunei Darussalam (1984)
Negara Brunei Darussalam

Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888 and adopted the current yellow, white and black flag in 1906, when it became a dependency of Great Britain.

On the 29th of September 1959, the national crest of Brunei was superimposed on the yellow, white and black flag.

In 1971, Brunei was given full internal self-government, though Great Britain remained responsible for defence and foreign affairs.

Slight modifications were made to the flag when independence was proclaimed in 1984.

The Symbolic Meaning

The colours yellow, white and black are the colours of the sultan and the two other principal signatories to the 1906 agreement.

The national crest was developed from a royal emblem:

The four-feathered wing symbolises peace, tranquillity, prosperity and the protection of justice.

The hands stand for the government’s pledge to promote welfare, peace and prosperity.

The crescent is symbolic of the national religion, Islam and bears the words of the national motto: 'Always render service by God’s guidance'.

The scroll beneath the crest reads: 'Brunei, the Abode of Peace'.
