National Flag of the Republic of Botswana (1966)

The flag of landlocked Botswana was adopted upon independence from Great Britain on the 30th of September 1966.

The flag Botswana's first president, President Seretse Khama, presented for legislative approval reflects a desire for peaceful co-existence and equality for all people. 

The Symbolic Meaning

The blue fields top and bottom are symbolic of the sky and of the importance of water, giving life
to the land and the people.  

Black and white are symbolic of the majority African and minority European peoples within the Botswana population.  

The black and white stripes are symbolic of peaceful co-existence, equality and provision of opportunity for all people.
