Belarus, formerly the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic, declared its independence on
the 25th of
August 1991, during the collapse of the USSR.
In May
1995, a national referendum approved the adoption of a new flag similar in design to the flag used when
Belarus was part of the USSR. The
new design was introduced in a presidential decree in June 1995 and
the current flag was officially adopted on the 7th of June 1995. |

The red and white
pattern at the hoist of the flag is a national ornament, representing
woven cloth.
Green symbolises the forests
and agriculture of Belarus. Red represents Belarus' revolutionary struggle during the 20th
century.
Historically, red has been symbolic of defiance, revolution, socialism,
communism, bloodshed and the struggle for independence in the region.
