National Flag of the People's Republic of Bangladesh (1972)
Gana Prajatantri Bangladesh

Bangladesh, officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh, declared independence from Pakistan on the 26th of March 1971, following the election of a pro-independence provincial government.

During the subsequent nine months of civil war, independence forces used a flag consisting of a yellow silhouetted map of Bangladesh on a red disc, the disc off-centre on a green field.

Bangladesh's official separation from Pakistan was achieved on the 16th of December 1971.

In January 1972, the successful Bangladeshi government adopted a revised version of the flag used during the struggle for independence.

The current flag, adopted on the 25th of January 1972, bears the red disc, off-centre on a green field.

The Symbolic Meaning

The blue-green field behind the disc symbolizes the Bangladeshi landscape, its fertility and vigour.

The orange-red disc is symbolic of the rising sun and of the blood spilled in the struggle for independence.
