Flag of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas (1973)

The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is a country comprising about 700 islands and islets in the Atlantic Ocean.

A new flag was adopted when the Bahamas achieved independence from Great Britain on the 10th of July 1973.

The striking Bahaman flag was chosen to represent the chain of islands as a result of a flag competition.

The flag was designed to reflect the bright image of the Bahamas.

The Symbolic Meaning

Aquamarine symbolises the aquamarine waters, which surround the chain of islands and yellow represents their sandy beaches touching sparkling blue waters. Black represents the people, united in vigour and force.

The triangle represents the people's enterprise and determination to develop the Bahamas resources, both from land and sea.
