Citizens in the Vice-Royalty of Rio de la Plata, consisting of the current nations Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, demonstrated en masse against Spanish rule in May 1810.

They wore blue and white cockades (rosettes) as they rose to show their discontent and their desire for independence. Widespread use of the cockade saw it being declared the national cockade in 1812 and shortly after a flag was struck using the same colours.

In 1818, the national symbol, the sun, was added to the civil flag, thus creating the state flag.

The current civil and state flags date from the 16th of August 1985.

The Symbolic Meaning

The celestial blue represents the skies over Argentina and white depicts the snow on the
Andes.

When the sun symbol was later added to the flag, the image represented the sun appearing in
cloudy skies on the day of the first demonstration for independence, the 25th of May 1810.

The May Sun has become a national symbol of Argentina.
