National Flag of the People's Republic of Angola (1975)
República de Angola

Angolans fought a savage, fifteen year war of liberation before attaining independence from the
Portuguese in 1975.

The current national flag was introduced on the 11th of November 1975, after independence was established.

The fight for liberation was followed by a violent civil war that lasted twenty-one years, as Angola struggled to exist as a nation.

The Symbolic Meaning

Red symbolises the blood shed in the fight for Angolan liberty and independence. Black represents the African continent and people. Yellow signifies prosperity in Angola.

The machete represents agriculture and the farmers, while the cog-wheel represents industry and the workers. The star is the international symbol for socialism or communism.

The flag represents the continent and people of Africa, their struggle for independence, their livelihood and their philosophical and practical leanings.
