Flag of the Territory of American Samoa (1960) |
Under the guidance of the Institute of Heraldry of the U.S. Army,
traditional leaders of American
Samoa's Executive Council agreed on a flag design for the
territory. The
current flag was
introduced on the 27th April 1960, coinciding with American
Samoa's proclamation of a new constitution and becoming a self-governing United States territory. |

The Symbolic Meaning |
|
The flag bears elements symbolic for both American Samoa and the United States of America. The combined use of these elements represents protection and friendship between the governments.
The bald-headed eagle, an American symbol of protection, holds in its talons a fue and a nifo oti.
The fue is a staff used by Samoan Chiefs and is a Samoan symbol of wisdom and the nifo oti is a Samoan dancing knife, indicative of Samoan culture.
The colours red and white had their origins in an earlier Samoan flag and with the addition of dark blue,
they also represent the flag of the United States of America.
