Flag of the United Nations (1947)

In 1945, representatives of 50 countries from around the world gathered in San Francisco, U.S.A. to draw up the charter of the United Nations.

Among other things, the U.N. charter commits the signatory members and the United Nations organisation to promoting international peace and security.

The United Nations now consists of a number of organisations, some autonomous, all dealing with different international concerns.

The central emblem used on the United Nations flag started out as a button design, commissioned for the 1945 San Francisco conference. A modified design was later approved for use as the official seal and emblem of the United Nations.

The flag of the United Nations was adopted from this design on the 20th of October 1947.

The Symbolic Meaning

The blue and white represent peace.

In the centre of the flag is a representation of the world, symbolising the United Nations worldwide involvement.

The two branches surrounding the map of the world are olive branches, a symbol of peace dating back to ancient Greece.
