National Flag of the Republic of Eritrea (1995)

In 1952 British colonial rule ended when the United Nations federated Eritrea to neighbouring Ethiopia.

This turned out to be an Ethiopian annexation and signalled the onset of a long battle for Eritrean independence.

After 30 years of conflict with Ethiopia, Eritrea finally achieved independence on the 24th of May 1993 and adopted its current national flag.

With the addition of an olive wreath and branch, it is the same design as the flag of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, which led the fight for Eritrean independence.

Minor alterations were made to the flag in 1995, but the basic design has remained unchanged since its adoption in 1993.

The Symbolic Meaning

The olive wreath and branch on the flag originate from Eritrea's first national flag, used between 1952 and 1959. The olive wreath was adopted from the United Nations flag and symbolises peace.

The basic design of the flag was adopted from the flag of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front, which led the fight for Eritrean freedom.
