The Australian Torres Strait Islander Flag (1992)

The Torres Strait Islander flag was adopted in May 1992 during the Torres Strait Islands Cultural Festival.

Its origin is attributed to the late Bernard Namok of Thursday Island.

The Australian Torres Strait Islander flag was proclaimed as a flag of Australia on the 14th of July 1995.

The Symbolic Meaning

The central emblem of the flag is a Dari, a traditional dancer's headdress, a symbol representing all Torres Strait Islanders.

The five-pointed star represents the island groups in Torres Strait and is also an important symbol of seafaring people who navigate by the stars.

White represents peace. Green symbolises the land. Blue connotes the sea and black represents the people.

The flag stands for the unity and identity of all Torres Strait Islanders.
