Designed in either 1823 or 1824 by Captain John Bingle and Captain John Nicholson, the National Colonial flag was the first attempt to create a unique Australian flag.
The flag consists of 4 stars, which represent the constellation the Southern Cross on a flag similar to the British Royal Navy
ensign (the red cross of St George on a white field with the Union
Flag or Union
Jack in the upper hoist). |
|
The Union Jack in the upper hoist symbolises Australia’s historical link to Great Britain.
The four stars on the flag symbolise the constellation the Southern Cross, representing the stars Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.
The Southern Cross, a prominent constellation seen from the southern hemisphere. It denotes Australia’s geographical position in the world. |
