The Australian Federation flag was a popular symbol in the late 19th century, used to promote national consciousness.
It was based on the widely liked New South Wales ensign (flag) of the 1830s.
Also known as the Australian Ensign it was the preferred design of Prime Minister Edmund Barton for the national flag.
In 1902, he submitted it to the British government as an alternative design to the flag, which would eventually become the Australian national flag.
