The Australian Aboriginal Flag (1971)

The Aboriginal Flag was designed and created by Aboriginal Artist Harold Thomas in 1971.

The Flag was first raised on the 12th of July 1971 in Victoria Square, Adelaide, on what is now called National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Celebration, NAIDOC. (Also known as the National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee.) 

The Australian Aboriginal flag was proclaimed as a flag of Australia on the 14th of July 1995.

The Symbolic meaning

Black represents the Aboriginal people past, present and future.

Yellow represents yellow ochre and the Sun, the giver of life.

Red represents the red earth, Aboriginal spiritual relationship with the land and red ochre used in ceremonies.
