State Flag of the Island Territory of Aruba (1976)

Aruba is situated off the north coast of Venezuela and was formerly part of the Netherlands Antilles.

Aruba gained self-government and its own flag on the 1st of January 1986.

Although it is autonomous, as an overseas territory of the Netherlands the flag of Aruba is flown subordinate to the flag of the Netherlands whenever the flags fly together.

The current flag dates from the 18th of March 1976.

The Symbolic Meaning

The blue background of the flag represents the blue Caribbean Sea under blue skies.

The four-pointed red star outlined in white carries much symbolism.  It represents Aruba's red soils and white sandy beaches. It also symbolises the four points of the compass from which the people of Aruba came, joining together in their united island territory.

In addition, the four-pointed star represents the four languages spoken on the island, Papiamento, Dutch, Spanish and English.

Although made up of culturally diverse peoples, the star indicates a coming together in harmony.

The yellow stripes are indicative of the sun and tourism and also represent Aruba's natural mineral resources, all are important to the island's economy.
