National Flag of the Republic of Armenia (1990)

Modern day Armenia formed part of the Russian Empire until the Russian Revolution of 1917 provided an opportunity for a brief lasting independent Armenian state.

In April 1918, Armenia adopted its current national flag for the first time; this was withdrawn in 1921 after the annexation of Armenia by the newly formed Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

As the Soviet Union began to collapse in the late 1980s and central Soviet control relaxed, Armenia re-adopted its national flag on the 24th of August 1990.

In September 1991, Armenia proclaimed its independence from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).

The Symbolic Meaning

Red symbolises the blood spilt in the struggle for Armenian independence. Blue represents the sky and hope for the future, while orange symbolises the courage and creative labour of the Armenian people.
