Flag of the Principality of Andorra (circa 1866)
Principado de Andorra (Spanish)
Principat d'Andorra (Catalonian)
Principauté d'Andorre (French)

For many centuries Andorra has been a neutral area of land with the status of a nation.  Located
in a mountain valley, it is protected jointly by Spain and France, with a local General Council.

The civil flag, adopted in 1866, reflects these associations.

The current design of the state flag, dating from July 1993, is the same tricolour with the state arms centred on the yellow.

The state arms bear the insignia: VIRTVS VNITA FORTIOR, which means 'United Strength Is Stronger'.

The Symbolic Meaning

Blue and yellow represent the Spanish connections and blue and red represent the connections
with France.

A more modern interpretation has blue representing France, red symbolising Spain and yellow representing the Vatican, the home of the Roman Catholic church.

Roman Catholicism is the main religion in Andorra.
